Google Voice is a telecommunications service (voice and SMS) offered by Google launched March 11, 2009 in the United States. It follows the acquisition by Google Gizmo which was the only competitor to Skype.
This service was normally reserved for people with a US IP (web access) and an American phone number (identity verification during the activation of the service); that is to say, Americans or anyone with a US virtual IP address (VPN) and a US virtual phone number (NIDDM). However, from August 2011, some functions are available (VoIP, call history) for users in other countries, including Canada. It was first necessary to have a Gmail address in American English and Google Labs is activated. In 2014 Google Voice has been integrated and replaced by Google Hangouts.
